Chapel of Light and Shadow

(plays best @1080p, sounds best with headphones)

In a run-down area of Knoxville, on the north side of the tracks, a chapel will be erected for the homeless who congregate there. Constructed from wooden palettes and pre-assembled, the structure maintains the purity of form and minimal difficulty for erecting. This allows for a low-cost, yet spiritual space for those who have no where to go.

The entry to the chapel is beneath a bridge, a hollow through which one must pass where the sounds of the outside world are muted, the light is suddenly contrasting to a brilliant white beyond the tunnel and the occasional drip echoes faintly  where a ritual font allows for the cleansing of hands before proceeding into the sacred space of the chapel. Beside the chapel, a "forest" composed of old telephone poles closely placed and a long patio gives the homeless of North Knoxville a place of dignity and peace to rest.

Open to the elements this structure utilizes light, shadows, and sound to impart a sense of sacredness--from the low hum of the distant highway and roar of the train into the silence of night, the chapel takes the ambiance of the world around it and channels it into a singular experience of heightened awareness.
